QUEBEC CITY -- Patrick Roy said Sunday that he doesn't plan to coach the hockey team he has part interest in after he retires from the NHL.
The Colorado Avalanche star and the winningest goalie in league history is deciding whether to return for a 19th season. The 37-year-old Roy is part owner of the Quebec Remparts, a major junior hockey team, and drew a crowd of players during the team's practice at the Memorial Cup.
"I'm having a blast,'' Roy said. "I'm passionate about this game anyway. I always have been.''
He said, though, that while he likes to teach players, he doesn't like to coach.
"The coaching part of the game is discipline and being behind the bench. That's not something I'm really excited about, but I enjoy going on the ice and enjoy sharing the experience I went through,'' he said.
Roy has won four Stanley Cup rings: two with Montreal and two with Colorado. He has said he will announce his career plans at the conclusion of this year's playoffs.
He said he is 90 percent sure of his decision, but wants to wait until he's absolutely certain.
"I think it's important when you've played for 18 years, you have to take your time, you have to be patient and you have to make sure it's the right decision,'' Roy said.
He spent his major junior career with the Granby Bisons and said being involved the Remparts is a chance to give back.
"For me, even more special, the only trophy I haven't touched at a professional level is the Memorial Cup,'' he said.
He said his role with the Remparts is to provide individual instruction and support for the players and not to tinker with the coaching. |
