NEW YORK -- The news keeps getting worse for the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins capped a bad week Friday by placing center Martin Straka on injured reserve with a strained hamstring. The move was retroactive to Sunday, the day before Pittsburgh dumped the salary of All-Star right wing Alexei Kovalev by shipping him to the New York Rangers as part of an eight-player trade. On Tuesday, Penguins right wing Aleksey Morozov underwent season-ending surgery to repair a broken wrist. The team also announced Friday that center Jan Hrdina, the team's second-leading scorer, will miss weekend games against the New York Rangers and New Jersey due to a hip injury. Despite missing the first 11 games of the season due to a back injury, the 30-year-old Straka is third on the team in scoring with 14 goals and 19 assists. To fill the roster spot, Pittsburgh recalled center Tomas Surovy from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. The 21-year-old Czech is third on the AHL Penguins in scoring with 19 goals and 20 assists in 38 games. |
