Fedorov: 'I'm thinking I should be playing more'

Associated Press

DENVER -- The Detroit Red Wings can't seem to break out of their slump and it's wearing on veteran center Sergei Fedorov.

Detroit's winless streak reached six games (0-4-2) with a 5-3 loss to Colorado on Saturday, after which Fedorov complained about his playing time.

"I don't know what to think. I've basically given up thinking," Fedorov said. "I just sit on the bench and watch the rest of them."

On Sunday, Fedorov made it clear that he wanted to remain a Red Wing, but he also accused his current and former coaches of testing him and decried his reduced role.

"This is the worst time," he said Sunday. "Worst time. I figured I have nothing really to lose except to make this team better if I speak out."

Fedorov did not practice because of a sore neck suffered late in Saturday's game, but he expects to play Monday night against San Jose. He met for about 15 minutes with coach Dave Lewis, who was largely sympathetic.

"I think he's just frustrated," Lewis said. "He feels he can do more. I agree with him. He's not the only guy that is in that same situation, he just had the courage to say that."

Reactions among Fedorov's teammates varied.

Steve Yzerman said he should have gone directly to Lewis rather than speak to the media. Igor Larionov said Fedorov is "a huge part of this team; obviously you want to see the guy happy and scoring some big goals for us."

The Russian star scored 16 goals in the first 30 games this season as Detroit opened defense of the Stanley Cup with the best record in the Western Conference.

But as the Red Wings have slipped in the standings, so has Fedorov's production.

Detroit is 5-9-2-1 in 2003 and has not won since a 4-2 victory over Colorado on Jan. 16 to drop three points behind St. Louis in the Central Division.

Fedorov still leads the Red Wings with 46 points, but he has just three goals in 16 games since scoring twice against Columbus on Dec. 14.

"Of course I'm thinking I should be playing more. It's always been a problem so far in my career," Fedorov said after Saturday's loss. "Obviously, right now we're struggling. The first 20 games of the season, I was needed. After that, I don't know what happened. Maybe because my contract is up. I don't know what to think. I'm just upset right now."

Fedorov has averaged 20:58 of ice time this season, first among Detroit's forwards and fourth on the team. He had an assist and Detroit's third goal against Colorado, but he played just 11:53 -- 10th on the team.

"I was dry on the bench the first period. I was just watching the game as a spectator," Fedorov said. "There is no such thing, after 13 seasons in this league that surprises me anymore. But it definitely got me upset that's for sure.

"Obviously I'm just one of those guys who's just watching these days instead of participating in it."

Fedorov has been one of the league's most exciting players during his 13-year career. He has played in the All-Star Game six times, including the last three, and has 384 goals and 533 assists in 883 games.
