U.S to face Finland for bronze medal

Associated Press

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia -- Jeff Woywitka scored with 11:40 left as Canada defeated the United States 3-2 Friday night to reach the final of the World Junior Championships.

Canada will play Russia, which beat Finland 4-1 in the other semifinal, in Sunday's championship. It'll be a rematch of last year's title game in the Czech Republic, won by Russia 5-4.

The U.S. team will play Finland for the bronze. The Americans took fifth last year.

Canada outshot the U.S. team 42-15, but U.S. goaltender Bobby Goepfert -- a Pittsburgh Penguins draft pick -- gave his team a chance to reach its first final since 1997.

"He's a great goaltender,'' said Canada defenseman Nathan Paetsch. "He played unreal for them.''

Paetsch and Pierre-Marc Bouchard also scored for Canada, while Eric Nystrom and Ryan Kesler scored for the United States.

Kesler scored on a rebound to tie the game at 2-2 at 1:06 of the third, as Canada allowed its first power-play goal of the tournament.
