Americans advance to semifinals with win over Czechs

Associated Press

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia -- Bobby Goepfert made 22 saves as the United States advanced to play Canada in the semifinals of the World Junior Championships with a 4-3 victory over the Czech Republic on Thursday.

USA vs. Canada
The semifinal matchup between Team USA and Team Canada is scheduled for Friday at 7:10 p.m. ET.

The game will be broadcast on tape delay on the YES network (DirecTV, channel 622) at midnight and 1 p.m. Saturday.

The game can be heard live via the Internet at www.usahockey.com.
The U.S. team improved to 4-1 in the tournament. The Canadians had a bye after finishing first in their group at 4-0. The teams will meet Friday night for a spot in Sunday night's title game.

"I told our players to walk back to the hotel, get something to eat, have a soak in the tub and go to bed because when they get up tomorrow, win or lose, they're in for a treat," U.S. coach Lou Vairo said. "We're in the mecca of hockey."

Dwight Helminen, Zach Parise, Ryan Kesler and Ryan Suter scored for the United States against the Czech Republic.

Milan Michalek, Lukas Krajiceck of the Peterborough Petes, and Jiri Hudler scored for the Czechs, who can finish no better than fifth.
