Richter remains out indefinitely

ESPN.com news services

Mike Richter does indeed have a concussion and will continue to be out indefinitely.

The New York Rangers goaltender completed two days of tests under the supervision of concussion specialist Dr. Karen Johnston.

Richter was accidentally kneed in the head by Todd Marchant of the Edmonton Oilers on Nov. 5. The team initially believed the injury was a concussion, and the fears were confirmed by Dr. Johnston.

The Rangers do not know how long Richter will be sidelined.

"We have no idea. No idea," general manager Glen Sather told New York reporters on Friday.

Dan Blackburn, who has been playing well in place of Richter, was scheduled to make his fifth straight start, against the Vancouver Canucks Saturday night. In his last game, Blackburn made 35 saves in a 2-1 victory over the Calgary Flames on Thursday.

"I don't try and worry about the overall situation," Blackburn told reporters. "Anyone could get overwhelmed by doing that. I'm just going to try and focus on each game, one at a time, and try to be successful that way."

The MRI report on Bobby Holik confirmed that the veteran center has two small ligament tears at the hip and pelvis. "There's no other course of action to take other than to see how Bobby responds; it could be five days or five weeks," Sather told reporters. "I hope it's five days."
