NEW YORK -- Right wing Steve Heinze of the Los Angeles Kings and goaltender Damian Rhodes of the Atlanta Thrashers were among those left unprotected for Friday's NHL waiver draft, the league announced Wednesday. Also available will be veteran forwards German Titov of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and Stu Grimson of the Nashville Predators, and defensemen Jyrki Lumme of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Sylvain Lefebvre of the New York Rangers. Heinze is among the biggest names, although he fell out of favor in Los Angeles last season and was benched in the playoffs. The 32-year-old has scored 20 or more goals four times in 10 full NHL seasons. Rhodes is the most established of the netminders available, but three separate ailments caused him to fail a physical during a recent tryout with the Florida Panthers. The 33-year-old played only 15 games with Atlanta last season. Titov scored more than 20 goals in his first three full NHL seasons but has totaled only 22 the last two years with Anaheim. Some players are victims of injury while others have succumbed to age. Grimson is one of the game's premiere enforcers, but he has concussion issues and might retire. Lumme turned 36 this summer and Lefebvre will be 35 in two weeks. Defenseman Drake Berehowsky is one of only two Phoenix Coyotes available, but he is out six months due to knee ligament surgery. Calgary Flames forward Dave Lowry captained the team last season but also was sent to the minors and is 36. Some past prospects also were left unprotected, like defenseman Nikos Tselios, the cousin of Detroit Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios, who was the Carolina Hurricanes' first-round pick in 1997, and Vancouver Canucks forward Steve Kariya, the brother of Anaheim winger Paul Kariya. The defending Stanley Cup champion Red Wings have seven players available, most notably forward Stacy Roest. |
