Bowman to receive award at Dec. 4 inductions

Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS -- Former University of Minnesota men's hockey coach Doug Woog is among four people who will be inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Dec. 4.

Joining Woog are Harvard stars Mark and Scott Fusco -- the first brothers ever to be inducted together in the same year -- and Dartmouth College star Joe Riley.

The 29th annual induction ceremony, which will be held at Touchstone Energy Place, will also honor NHL coaching legend Scotty Bowman with the 2002 Wayne Gretzky International Award. The award is given annually to an international citizen who has made a major contribution to the growth and advancement of American hockey.

Woog coached the Golden Gophers for 14 seasons (1985-99), averaging 28 wins a year en route to becoming Minnesota's all-time winningest coach (389-187-40). His teams made six NCAA Final Four appearances.

Woog also starred for South St. Paul High School and was an All-American for the Gophers in 1967.

Mark Fusco, of Burlington, Mass., became the first defenseman to win the Hobey Baker Award, given to college hockey's best player, while playing for the Crimson in 1983. He is the all-time leading scorer among defensemen in Harvard history. He also played two seasons with the Hartford Whalers of the NHL.

Mark Fusco's younger brother, Scott, won the Hobey Baker Award in 1986, making the Fuscos the only siblings to win the award. Scott Fusco is the all-time leading scorer in Harvard history (240 points) and was a two-time All American and Olympian.

Riley, of Medford, Mass., joins his brothers Jack and Bill in the U.S. Hall of Fame. He began his college hockey career at Illinois, but was called to military service in World War II. He returned to play at Dartmouth from 1947-49, where he holds the team single-season record for goals scored.

The U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame is located in Eveleth, in northeastern Minnesota.
