Chelios' contract would be for two years, according to Hradek, and an announcement could come as early as Wednesday. He has been seeking a contract of that length for $7 million per season.

The Red Wings originally offered Chelios a one-year deal at his current annual salary of $5.5 million.

Chelios, 40, has been in talks with Detroit, the Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Rangers, but he has made it clear he wants to remain with the Stanley Cup champions.
