Free agent defenseman Chris Chelios is very close to re-signing with the Detroit Red Wings, ESPN The Magazine's E.J. Hradek reported Tuesday.
Chelios' contract would be for two years, according to Hradek, and an announcement could come as early as Wednesday. He has been seeking a contract of that length for $7 million per season. The Red Wings originally offered Chelios a one-year deal at his current annual salary of $5.5 million. Chelios, 40, has been in talks with Detroit, the Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Rangers, but he has made it clear he wants to remain with the Stanley Cup champions. |
