Wings make new offer to Chelios

ESPN.com news services

The Detroit Red Wings have tendered an offer to 40-year-old defenseman Chris Chelios, Wings general manager Ken Holland said Friday.

Holland told Booth Newspapers that he hoped to hear sometime this weekend from Chelios' agent, Tom Reich.

"I think both sides need to know prior to (Monday) if we have a contract," Holland said. "Once (Monday) comes, both sides have to be prepared to take care of their own business. We both run the risk of heading in opposite directions come (Monday)."

Chelios, who has said he wants to remain in Detroit, has been seeking a two-year deal worth $7 million a season. The Wings originally offered Chelios a one-year deal at his current annual salary of $5.5 million.

Holland did not reveal what details of the latest offer to Chelios.
