CALGARY, Alberta -- The Calgary Flames, who missed the playoffs for the sixth straight season, re-signed center Rob Niedermayer on Monday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Niedermayer was eligible to become a restricted free agent on July 1. He was acquired from the Florida Panthers along with a second-round draft pick last June for Valeri Bure and Jason Wiemer and had six goals and 14 assists in 57 games with Calgary this past season. The 27-year-old Niedermayer was the fifth overall pick in the 1993 draft and had 101 goals and 165 assists in seven seasons with the Panthers. He had five goals and three assists in 22 games in the 1996 playoffs when Florida was swept in the Stanley Cup Finals by the Colorado Avalanche. Niedermayer's younger brother Scott is a defenseman with the New Jersey Devils. Calgary (32-35-12-3) has not made the playoffs since getting swept by the Chicago Blackhawks in the Western Conference quarterfinals in 1996. The Flames had one big bright spot this season in right wing Jarome Iginla, who also is eligible to become a restricted free agent on July 1. Iginla, who turns 25 on July 1, led the NHL in goals and points and is a Hart Trophy finalist. |
