Rangers interested in signing eight-time All-Star

Rangers general manager Glen Sather had a 15-minute telephone conversation with the agent of Brett Hull on Saturday about signing the unrestricted free agent, the New York Times reported.

With their acquisition of Eric Lindros, the Rangers may be the leading candidate to land the 37-year-old Hull. The eight-time All-Star had 39 goals and 79 points for the Dallas Stars last season.

But Hull's agent, Mike Barnett, told the Times no deal had been made and it was "very premature" to say Hull would end up in a Rangers sweater.

Barnett told the Times three teams -- the Canadiens, Canucks and a another he identified only as "a very good team" -- have made offers for Hull.

"He could have already been signed by now," Barnett said. "We're not waiting for New York. We just haven't got a deal elsewhere."

Barnett and Sather are expected to discuss talk further either Monday after the news conference announcing the Lindros signing or Tuesday.

The Times reported Hull is looking for a two-year deal at about $5 million or $6 million a season.
