DENVER -- Colorado Avalanche defenseman Nolan Pratt finally
got his wish to be traded.
The team dealt defenseman Chris Dingman to Carolina for a
fifth-round draft pick Sunday and traded Pratt to Tampa Bay for a
sixth-round draft choice.
The Stanley Cup champions used the 149th overall pick they got
from Carolina to select Mikko Viitanen of Finland. The Avalanche
chose Massachusetts-Amherst right wing Scott Horvath with the 184th
selection they acquired by trading Pratt.
Pratt joined the Avalanche from Carolina last year and asked to
be traded midway through the season as his playing time dwindled.
He played in 46 games, averaging 9:50 minutes of ice time, and
collected a goal and two assists. He did not play in the playoffs
for Colorado.
Dingman averaged 2 1/2 minutes of penalties in every game he played
last season for Colorado.
The 6-foot-4, 225-pound left wing was the first-round pick of
the Calgary Flames in 1994. He had just one goal and one assist in
41 regular-season games for the Avalanche, but had 108 penalty
minutes.
Dingman, who will be 25 in two weeks, has 12 career goals in 182
NHL games, with 413 penalty minutes. He had four assists in 16
playoff games this year for the Stanley Cup champions.
In one season in junior hockey, Dingman had 409 penalty minutes.
"Chris played in the Stanley Cup finals and he was one of their
good players," Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford said.
"He's a guy who will come in and play on our team and make our
team bigger."
Prior to the draft, Rutherford said he was looking for a left
winger to play alongside captain Ron Francis. Dingman also could
play on the team's third line.
Dingman made $500,000 last season and is a restricted free
agent.
Pratt, 25, made $550,000 and also can become a restricted free
agent.
