Yzerman undergoes knee surgery

DETROIT -- Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman is out indefinitely after undergoing surgery Monday to repair torn cartilage in his right knee.

WDFN Radio in Detroit reported that Yzerman is expected to be sidelined six to eight weeks.

The Red Wings do not plan any immediate roster changes.

"He missed several of the last few games so we don't need to make roster moves," a team spokesman said.

Yzerman's agent, Larry Kelly, was not immediately available for comment.

Yzerman was scratched before Sunday night's 4-2 loss to the Calgary Flames in Detroit. The knee strain sidelined him from the Red Wings' final two exhibition games and their first two games of the season.

He was injured in Detroit's Sept. 28 exhibition victory over Toronto when he fell over teammate Maxim Kuznetsov. He was placed on injured reserve Oct. 3 and activated a week later.

Yzerman, a nine-time All-Star, has spent his entire 17-year career with the Red Wings.

He is tied for sixth all-time with 1,563 points and one of only three active players with more than 600 goals (627).

Yzerman led Detroit with 79 points last season, recording 35 goals and 44 assists in 78 games, and won the Selke Trophy as the National Hockey League's top defensive forward.

He finished with a plus-28 rating and ranked sixth in the league with a 56.8 face-off percentage.

Yzerman had six straight 100-point seasons from 1987-93 and is a five-time 50-goal scorer and two-time 60-goal scorer.

Teammate Brendan Shanahan said it's good Yzerman had the surgery now.

"If there was a good time do it, it's good to get it over with early in the season," he said.

Sergei Fedorov, one of the Red Wings' other veteran leaders, said he hoped the adjustment period for the rest of the team would be short.

"Hopefully everybody realizes that we've got to step up, all of us, not just one or two players, because it's important to play well as a team," Fedorov said.
