TRENTON, N.J. -- John LeClair scored two goals as the
Philadelphia Flyers opened the exhibition season with a 4-2 victory
over the New York Islanders on Thursday night.
LeClair, recently awarded a $7 million, one-year contract by an
arbitrator, beat former Flyers goalie John Vanbiesbrouck in the
first and second periods.
Kevin Stevens, playing for the first time since his arrest in
January on drug charges, also scored for the Flyers.
Stevens is still facing felony drug possession charges and
misdemeanor charges of soliciting a prostitute and possessing drug
paraphernalia in Illinois while a member of the New York Rangers.
The Flyers played without Eric Desjardins, Mark Recchi and Brian
Boucher. Center Eric Lindros, who remains unsigned, is not in
training camp.
Brad Tiley added a goal for Philadelphia, and Mariusz Czerkawski
and Mathieu Biron scored for New York.
Vanbiesbrouck, traded to New York in the offseason after losing
his starting job to Boucher last season, made 27 saves.
Maxime Ouellet, the Flyers' first-round draft pick in 1999,
stopped all 18 shots he faced after entering the game midway
through the second period.
