MONTREAL -- Center Trevor Linden of the Montreal Canadiens will undergo surgery Thursday to repair two fractured ribs and will miss the remainder of the season.

Linden was injured when Tampa Bay defenseman Pavel Kubina fell on him during a goalmouth scramble in the first period of the Lightning's 4-3 win Tuesday night.

Linden missed 20 games earlier in the season with a sprained ankle.

The injury came just three days after captain Saku Koivu tore a knee ligament. Koivu is also out for Montreal's final 12 games.

"It's going to be a huge challenge for us for the 12 remaining games," teammate Sergei Zholtok said.

The Canadiens, who have battled back into playoff contention despite losing 483 man-games to injury, lost to a sub-.500 team for the second successive game after winning 11 of 15.

Linden, who scored his 13th goal on Montreal's first shot, stayed in the hospital overnight.
