BOSTON -- The Boston Bruins suspended forward Joe Murphy on Thursday until further notice as punishment for what the club said was an act of insubordination.
"The reason was a violation of his contract which we determined to be conduct detrimental to the best interests of the club in the form of insubordination toward the coach," the statement said. O'Connell did not describe Murphy's actions, and team spokeswoman Heidi Holland refused to comment on the situation. Murphy's agent, Jay Fee, said the player and coach Pat Burns exchanged words and the Bruins decided to suspend Murphy without pay. Murphy played the first shift of Tuesday's game with Ottawa and then was removed. "This has been going on for a couple of weeks now and the whole thing has been settled and we're just going to move on," Burns said. But Fee met with O'Connell prior to the Bruins 4-2 win over Toronto on Thursday night in attempt to settle the matter. "We are trying to work to find a resolution to satisfy all parties," Fee said. "There's a remote possibility he'll play again for Boston." Murphy, 32, was signed by the Bruins as a free agent on Nov. 12. In 26 games this seasons, he had seven goals and seven assists for 14 points. "He's disappointed," Fee added. "He's an intense kid and is sorry it ever happened to begin with." | ALSO SEE Bruins get a rare taste of home-cooked victory |
