| UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- New York Islanders defenseman Rich Pilon was claimed on waivers Wednesday by the New York Rangers.

Pilon, the last Islander to play in the team's last playoff
series, in 1994 against the Rangers, had played only nine of the
Islanders' 21 games this season because of a sprained left knee.
Islanders general manager Mike Milbury said Pilon's $1.8 million
salary, one of the highest on the team, was part of the reason for
putting him on waivers.
"Can you pay $1.8 million to someone who only averages playing
half the games this season?" Milbury said. "We can't."
Pilon's physical style has left him vulnerable to injuries
throughout his career, but "I'm not going to change my game," he
said. "I've got to be myself."
The Islanders also placed forward Mark Lawrence on waivers.
