NEW YORK -- Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Darius Kasparaitis was suspended Wednesday for two games for his elbow to the head of Chicago Blackhawks forward Jean-Pierre Dumont.

Kasparaitis, who will lose $15,625, was assessed a major penalty and a game misconduct for the hit Saturday that left Dumont -- carried off the ice on a stretcher -- with a concussion.

"The hit delivered by Mr. Kasparaitis was deliberate and his opponent was not in possession of the puck nor in a position to defend himself," said NHL vice president Colin Campbell, who handed down the suspension. "This type of hit is dangerous and warrants disciplinary actions."

Chicago general manager Bob Murray says Kasparaitis will have more than money to pay.

"We're looking after things on the ice," Murray told the Chicago Sun-Times. "When Mr. Kasparaitis is coming to town to play, I hope he'll be a man and drop his gloves. We'll do it face-to-face. We won't sucker-punch or cheap-shot anyone."

Murray does not believe suspensions are effective.

"Money doesn't mean anything to these guys," he said. "The players have to sort this out themselves."

Dumont said he did not know if Kasparaitis' contact was a "good hit."

"I don't think so," he said. "But what can I do?"

Murray said Dumont will refrain from exercise the next couple of days after experiencing nausea and trouble with quick movements.
