DETROIT -- Detroit Red Wings right wing Kirk Maltby will miss at least Thursday's game against the Atlanta Thrashers and may need to undergo surgery due to a lower abdominal hernia.

Maltby, who signed a four-year contract with Detroit during the offseason, suffered the injury in the first period of Tuesday's 3-2 loss to Dallas and did not return. He did not make the trip to Atlanta and will be re-evaluated in Detroit on Friday to determine if surgery is necessary.

Maltby, 26, has not recorded a point in two games this season, his seventh in the NHL.

Maltby appeared in 53 games last season, his third full season with Detroit, after being acquired from the Edmonton Oilers in March 1996. He finished with eight goals and six assists and added one goal in 10 games during the playoffs as the Red Wings reached the Western Conference semifinals.

The 6-foot, 190-pound Maltby may be best known to Red Wings' fans for his outstanding performance in the 1997 playoffs, helping the franchise to its first Stanley Cup championship in 42 years. He scored five goals that postseason to surpass his total of three during the regular season. His shorthanded goal in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals against Philadelphia propelled Detroit to a four-game sweep.

Maltby has accumulated 47 goals and 37 assists in 356 regular-season games with the Oilers and Red Wings. In 60 playoff contests, he has nine goals and four assists.
