First-round picks: No. 27
2000-01 record: 48-21-9-4, 109 points (4th overall)
What they need
Ottawa has some top-notch talent at all positions, but the club will focus on adding depth at defense and possibly between the pipes. Ottawa has talent and youth on the blueline in Wade Redden, Chris Phillips and Sami Salo, but the picture gets a little murky after them.
In their system
Once again, Ottawa went outside North America with its first pick last year, selecting Russian defender Anton Volchenkov 21st overall. Volchenkov, who has good size at 6-foot-1, 209 pounds, registered 3-4-7 and was a plus-22 with Soviet Wings.
The Senators are banking on a trio of forwards to make an impact at training camp in September. Left winger Petr Schastlivy (101st overall in '98) notched three goals and five points in 17 games in Ottawa. Right winger Josh Langfeld (66th overall in '97) scored 16 goals and added 12 assists in 42 games last season as a senior at the University of Michigan. Harvard left winger Chris Bala scored 14 goals and added 16 assists in 32 games during his final year with the Crimson.
Recent draft history
The Senators like to look outside North America for talent. Of their nine first-round selections, five were born outside of North America.
