First-round picks: Nos. 18 and 30 (from Colorado)
2000-1 record: 38-28-13-3, 92 points (13th overall)
What they need
After their most successful campaign since 1992-93, the Kings will be looking to add a little more grit to their forward line by acquiring a power forward.
In the system
A pair of 2000 draftees had solid seasons in 2000-01. Left wing Alexander Frolov (20th overall) had 20 goals in 44 games for the Soviet Wings, while center Yanic Lehoux (86th overall) had 67 goals and 135 points for Baie-Comeau (QMJHL).
Another Quebec League prospect is goalie Jean- Francois Nogues (133rd overall in '99), who compiled a 25-11-2 record with a 3.46 GAA and an .899 save percentage in 41 appearances with Victoriaville.
In the AHL, defenseman Andreas Lilja (54th overall in '00) made the adjustment from Sweden to North America with the Lowell Lock Monsters, recording seven goals, 36 points and 149 penalty minutes in 61 games. Also at Lowell, right wing Brad Chartrand (free agent signee July '99), who spent almost all of 1999-00 with the Kings, had 17 goals and 51 points in 72 AHL games.
Also of note is center Jared Aulin (47th overall by COL in '00), who was acquired as part of the Rob Blake trade. He racked up 31 goals and 108 points in 70 games at Kamloops (WHL) last season.
Recent draft history
The Kings have had a first round pick in just 17 of 32 Entry Drafts since the current system was instituted in 1969. With their last five first-round selections, L.A. has taken two forwards, two defensemen, and one goaltender.
