Boston Bruins
|
First-round picks: No. 13 or 19 (Edmonton has the option of switching picks in 2001 or 2002)
2000-01 record: 36-30-8-8, 88 points (18th overall)
What they need
The Bruins need help on defense. And with veteran Byron Dafoe suffering from injuries each of the past two seasons, it wouldn't hurt to search for more netminding help. Last season, Boston used five different goaltenders.
In the system
The Bruins had two first-round picks last year, and tabbed defensemen with both selections. Lars Jonsson (7th overall) and Martin Samuelsson (27th overall) both spent last season in Sweden. Jonsson and Samuelsson will get a good look in training camp next season. The B's are hoping center Andy Hilbert (37th pick overall in 2000), who spent the last two seasons at the University of Michigan, matures into a front-line scorer.
Recent draft history
Boston has selected a defenseman with six of its last nine first-round selections dating back to its 1995 picks of rearguards Kyle McLaren and Sean Brown. Expect that trend to continue this year.
