Hull-Bowman marriage should work

By Brian Engblom
Special to ESPN.com

Detroit is a great situation for Brett Hull because the Red Wings have outstanding players who can pass him the puck, like Brendan Shanahan, Steve Yzerman and Nicklas Lidstrom. The list goes on. And Hull knows how to score.

He had a reputation for fighting the system before winning the Stanley Cup in Dallas, but Hull learned a lot with the Stars and proved he can get with the program. Now he goes to another team with a definite program under Scotty Bowman. Hull is never afraid to speak his mind. But if Bowman didn't want to coach Hull, the Red Wings wouldn't have gone after him. At the same time, Hull wouldn't have signed with Detroit if he didn't think he could work with Bowman.

Hull has something Bowman wants, and the two will work things out. Neither Hull nor Bowman will change much, but they will come together because they both ultimately want to win.

Hull will be terrific on the Red Wings' power play and with whomever he plays. There is no one better than Hull at scoring goals inside the blue line. He's another huge weapon for Detroit. One of the biggest problems for every team is being able to score goals at key times. Hull solves that problem for the Red Wings.

With the signings of Hull, Luc Robitaille and Dominik Hasek, the Red Wings have shown once again their affinity for experienced players. Over the years they have brought in older players like Larry Murphy and Chris Chelios. The formula has worked for them, even though they are often criticized for being too old.

Hull and Robitaille are two scorers who are as good as any and will end up in the Hall of Fame. The numbers -- 649 goals for Hull and 590 for Robitaille -- speak for themselves. On the ice I can see Hull and Robitaille playing together. Hull likes to hang off to the side, while Robitaille hangs around in the front of the net. If Hull's first shot doesn't go in, Robitaille can finish it off.

The Dallas Stars realized they would be without Hull. They were going in a different direction and are already making changes. There may be some disappointment because they were looking at Jeremy Roenick and also waiting for Joe Sakic to become a free agent, which never happened. Still, with the Stars' disciplined system and a strong core to go with Eddie Belfour, Dallas will remain a tough team to beat.

We need to wait and see how teams jell, but the Red Wings are always strong. With Hull, Robitaille and Hasek, Detroit is again a team to be reckoned with. Injuries will be a huge factor, but the Red Wings should be a great team.
