Oilers survive Flames' late rally

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) -- The Edmonton Oilers played a flawless first period and pretty good second period. An awful third period nearly cost them the game.

Edmonton scored three goals in the first period and Tommy Salo's 27 saves barely made that lead stand up as the Oilers beat Calgary 3-2 Wednesday night for their second straight win.

The Flames have lost four straight games.

"We played hard for 57 minutes tonight. It just goes to show you -- you can't play for anything less than 60," said Todd Marchant, who had two assists for Edmonton.

"We got lucky and came away with two points."

Salo, without a shutout this season, didn't give up a goal in the first two periods. But Calgary's Jeff Shantz scored at 16:38 of the third period, and -- with the goalie pulled -- Jason Wiemer added a power-play goal with 1:06 left to draw the Flames to 3-2.

Dave Lowry assisted on both of Calgary's goals.

"I think we recovered pretty well," Flames coach Don Hay said. "We stuck to the game plan and got better as the game went on."

Mike Grier, Rem Murray and Domenic Pittis scored for the Oilers (7-5-2-0), who were on an 0-4-1 slide before their current modest winning streak. Todd Marchant had two assists for Edmonton.

Calgary is 0-5-1 in its last six games.

Grier gave Edmonton the lead 2:22 into the opening period, and Murray made it 2-0 at 6:28.

At 11:24, Pittis scored his first goal for Edmonton in his second appearance of the season. It was his first goal since scoring his only other NHL goal for Buffalo on Oct. 20, 1999.

Game notes
Fred Brathwaite replaced Mike Vernon in Calgary's net after Pittis' goal. ... Vernon is 1-7 this season. ... Edmonton and Calgary have each won 63 games against the other team. They have played 16 ties.
