Oilers end slide with two in third

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) -- Tom Poti's first goal of the season couldn't have come at a better time for the struggling Edmonton Oilers.

Bill Guerin
Bill Guerin scored two goals, one in the third period that gave the Oilers insurance in a 5-3 win over Anaheim.

Poti scored the eventual game-winner and Bill Guerin added an insurance goal one minute later as the Oilers beat the Anaheim Mighty Ducks 5-3 Monday night and ended a three-game losing streak.

"Finally got a bounce, I guess," said Poti, who skated around a pair of defenders and banked home a backhander off the stick of Anaheim defenseman Patrick Traverse five minutes into the third. "I've had a lot of chances, but nothing's been going my way."

Edmonton coach Craig MacTavish said the Oilers and Poti were due.

"It was nice to see that fourth goal go in," MacTavish said. "Tommy creates a lot offensively but doesn't have a lot to show for it on the statistical side, so far. Hopefully, this will help his confidence."

The Oilers were 0-4-1 in their previous five games. The Ducks had won their previous two games.

"It's good to get back on the winning track," said Guerin, who made it 5-3 just 68 seconds after Poti scored. "It's always tough getting out of these skids. It was a nice win because we used everybody. I'm glad we were able to pull it out."

Guerin snapped a shot from the slot over the blocker of goalie Guy Hebert on a pass from behind the net by Doug Weight.

Janne Niinimaa and Chad Kilger also scored for Edmonton.

Oleg Tverdovsky, Teemu Selanne and Matt Cullen scored for Anaheim.

"We played too much in our end," Ducks coach Craig Hartsburg said. "When we did have the puck and have it in their end, we made some nice quality plays."

Tverdovsky opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 6:49 of the first period.

Niinimaa tied the game with a power-play goal at 10:07 of the first.

Guerin gave Edmonton a 2-1 lead at 13:04 with his seventh goal of the season.

Selanne, who has 30 goals in 39 games against the Oilers, tied the game 2-2 on a power play at 17:01.

The Ducks moved out to a 3-2 lead at 7:01 of the second.

Kilger pulled Edmonton into a 3-3 tie exactly six minutes later when he won a faceoff in the Ducks' zone. He passed to Eric Brewer, went to the net and deflected Brewer's shot past Hebert. It was Brewer's first point as an Oiler.

Game notes
Anaheim's Jason Marshall played his 306th game as a Mighty Duck, breaking Bobby Dollas's club record for defensemen ... Kariya's scoring streak reached eight games. Anaheim's captain has four goals and nine assists in the steak.
