PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- After a slow start, the Philadelphia Flyers
are showing some improvement.
Jeff Halpern scored two minutes into the third period and Olaf
Kolzig stopped 30 shots as the Washington Capitals tied the Flyers
1-1 Sunday night.

Philadelphia is 2-1-2 after opening the season 1-4-1.
"I think things are coming around," Flyers center Daymond
Langkow said. "It is a nice break lately considering the way we
were struggling. We have been playing well, but there is always
room for improvement."
Daymond Langkow gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead when he took a
rebound off Chris McAllister's shot in front of the net and pushed
a shot over the stick of a sprawled Kolzig at 8:41 of the second
period. A few minutes earlier, the Capitals goalie stopped
Langkow's backhander in the slot.
Flyers center Simon Gagne had the lone scoring opportunity in
overtime, but he fanned on a shot in the slot. Philadelphia, which
leads the league with 13 power-play goals, went 0-for-7 with the
man-advantage and haven't scored in their last 12 chances.
"With the way we played tonight, we didn't get the power play
going," said Flyers goalie Brian Boucher, who had 21 saves. "But
this is the way we have to play right now.
"We realize the commitment to little things, and the first few
games we were embarrassed."
Washington (1-5-4-1) has had to rally from third-period deficits
in all four ties this season.
Halpern tied the game on the power play two minutes into the
third period when he tipped in a loose puck over a sprawled Boucher
during a scramble in front of the net. Philadelphia's Dan McGillis,
whistled for charging at the end of the second period, was ready to
come out of the penalty box just as Halpern scored.
The Flyers managed just one shot during the first 10 minutes of
the final period, while Washington had seven. The Capitals outshot
Philadelphia 8-3 overall in the final period.
"We have to get more wins," Halpern said. "We were getting so
frustrated lately. We've had enough of this, and we're ready to
move on."
Langkow's goal awoke the Flyers' offense, which managed just
five shots on their first four power-play opportunities and went
scoreless through their first six chances. However, they managed
just two shots on a 5-on-3 advantage for 40 seconds late in the
second period, as Kolzig stopped Langkow and Andy Delmore.
"Ollie (Kolzig) was solid all night," Capitals head coach Ron
Wilson said. "He is starting to get his timing back.
"This was a real positive step for us. Our confidence is not
where it should be right now and we are afraid to lose. We are a
reactive team and not an active team."
Game notes
D Chris Therien, who missed six of the Flyers' first 10
games with back pain, practiced for the third straight day without
pain Saturday and is looking to return on Nov. 4 against Buffalo.
... Flyers RW Mark Recchi's blood tests recently came back
negative, which ruled out the possibility of mononucleosis. Recchi
is still feeling some fatigue and he will be evaluated either
Monday or Tuesday. ... Flyers LW Keith Jones will likely return in
a week from a mild concussion he suffered last week. ... Washington
RW Richard Zednik returned to the lineup for the first time after
serving a four-game suspension for a cross-check against Colorado
on Oct. 17.
