Joseph now 19-5-3 against Calgary

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) -- Curtis Joseph continued his mastery of the Calgary Flames on Saturday night.

Curtis Joseph
Curtis Joseph continues his anti-Calgary magic, redirecting a shot by Jason Wiemer out of harm's way.

Joseph made 32 saves, many of them spectacular, as the Toronto Maple Leafs scored twice early and hung on for a 2-1 victory.

"Some nights you're not so much of a factor and some nights you are, and tonight, it seemed like there was quite a bit of work," Joseph said. "I don't mind getting lots of work as long as we win."

The Flames dominated play, outshooting the Leafs 33-19, but were unable to solve Joseph, who improved to 19-5-3 in his career against Calgary.

"We threw everything we had at him, some were just hitting him, others I don't know how he got to," said Jarome Iginla, who scored the Flames' goal at 15:26 of the third.

"It's always tough to lose, but that was one of our best efforts in a game so far," Iginla said. "We had a lot of quality scoring chances, but it was a night where Joseph stood on his head right until the very last second."

With Calgary pressing for the tying goal late in the third period, Joseph made consecutive spectacular saves against Marc Savard on a close-in slap shot and sliding across the crease to block Iginla's shot.

"There's a few that I'd like to have back," Iginla said.

Toronto built a 2-0 lead with first-period goals by Steve Thomas and Tie Domi, each scoring their first of the season.

"It wasn't pretty, but we got the job done and it makes it a pretty good trip," Toronto captain Mats Sundin said.

The Maple Leafs head home after winning two of three on their Western road swing.

Calgary has won just once in five home games (1-4-0).

Thomas gave the Maple Leafs the lead just 33 seconds into the game, taking Sundin's pass one stride over the blue line and ripping a 40-foot slap shot just inside the goal post on Mike Vernon's glove side.

"It was a good feeling to get our team off to a good start," Thomas said. "To win the hockey game and know that I was a part of it, it makes me feel good."

Joseph was especially sharp in the second period, when four straight minor penalties to Toronto left the Flames with a 14-2 advantage in shots at one point in the period.

"Boy, it was nonstop for a while there," Joseph said. "We can't continue to take penalties like that and expect to win."

After Bryan McCabe's centering pass was redirected to the front of the net by Domi, defenseman Wade Belak attempted to shovel the puck back to Vernon, but the puck went under the goalie and into the net.

Game notes
Flames defenseman Brad Werenka was scratched due to a broken sinus bone (nose) sustained in Friday night's win over Boston. ...
