Stars net third straight win

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

DALLAS (AP) -- The Dallas Stars are still a team dominated by veterans. Some talented youngsters, however, are starting to make their mark.

Rookie Tyler Bouck scored his first NHL goal early in the third period and the Stars hung on for their third straight victory, 2-1 over the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday night.

Mike Keane
San Jose's Marcus Ragnarsson delivered a hard shot to Stars winger Mike Keane.

Bouck went airborne to knock in the rebound of Mike Keane's shot with 18:21 left to extend Dallas' lead to 2-0.

"I didn't even know I scored until Mike Keane went and got the puck (out of the net)," said the 20-year-old Bouck. "I skated hard to the net and batted it."

Second-year forward Brenden Morrow got the Stars' first goal early in the second period.

"A lot of people say we're too old and have too many new faces," Keane said. "I've always said that for the team to be successful, we've got to get scoring from the third and fourth lines. This wasn't a great game, but we beat a pretty good team tonight."

During the three-game winning streak, the Stars have returned to the stifling defensive style that got them into the Stanley Cup finals the past two seasons and helped them win the Cup in 1999. Dallas has allowed two goals in the last three games.

"It's definitely great to get the shots down and our defensive game back," said goalie Ed Belfour, who had to make only 12 saves as the Stars improved to 4-2-1.

Stars coach Ken Hitchcock emphasized the game because it was his team's first this season against a Pacific Division rival.

"We play this team six times and it's always a four-point game," Stars defenseman Derian Hatcher said. "I don't know if this is a message, but it's nice to win."

Jeff Friesen ended Belfour's bid for his 51st career shutout with 13:49 left on a power-play rebound that made it 2-1.

Evgeni Nabokov stopped 23 shots for the Sharks, who are 2-2-0.

Dallas held a 13-4 shots advantage in a scoreless first period, then got the game's first goal from Morrow 1:43 into the second.

Morrow notched his third of the season from the slot on a setup by Joe Nieuwendyk.

Sharks coach Darryl Sutter said the Stars set the tone early.

"Dallas is not going to go away," he said. "I thought the first period was played too much in our end. We knew they were going to come out of the gate quickly."

Sutter said Nabokov played well enough to win.

"When you get that kind of goaltending, you always have a chance to win," Sutter said. "I thought he played really well."

Game notes
The Stars activated forward Jon Sim from injured reserve. Sim had one goal in the preseason before fracturing a shoulder blade in training camp. Sim centered the fourth line in his first game back. ... The Sharks began a five-game, eight-day road trip. ... Sharks captain Owen Nolan remains out due to an abdominal tear. Top goalie Steve Shields also missed the game for San Jose with a sprained ankle.
