Lalime, Senators remain unbeaten

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

TORONTO (AP) -- If Patrick Lalime continues to shine, the Ottawa Senators could go a long way.

Lalime stopped 26 shots as the Senators blanked the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-0 Saturday night.

Toronto's Steve Thomas loses the battle in the crease Saturday vs. Ottawa.

"It's a good sign," said Lalime, who has beaten Ed Belfour, Martin Brodeur and Curtis Joseph in the last three games. "These are some big points for us."

Ottawa has three straight wins over Stanley Cup contenders, defeating the Stanley Cup champion New Jersey Devils 3-1 Friday night, along with a victory over the Dallas Stars, last season's Western Conference champions.

"It's a big challenge for me, but as long as you know what you can do the rest is going to take care of itself," Lalime said when asked about beating three of the top goalies in the league. "I just wanted to keep it going."

Lalime, who stopped 30 shots in Friday's win, recorded the seventh shutout of his career.

"I'm happy with the way he's responded," Senators coach Jacques Martin said of Lalime, who spent two years in the minors before spending time as Ottawa's backup last season. "He's a goalie that's looking to get an opportunity and he's making the most of it now."

Magnus Arvedson, Martin Havlat, Rob Zamuner and Sami Salo scored for the Senators.

The Maple Leafs defeated Ottawa in the first round of the playoffs last season.

"It was in the back of our minds that Toronto beat us out last year," Zamuner said.

Arvedson gave Ottawa a 1-0 lead at 12:24 of the first, converting Ricard Persson's pass in front of the net.

Havlat made it 2-0 after stealing the puck from Don MacLean and skating in alone before flipping it over goalie Joseph's right shoulder at 3:06 of the second.

Zamuner scored a short-handed goal at 5:17 of the third, snapping a wrist shot from the top of the right faceoff circle past Joseph.

"When they got that third goal we kind of said, 'We're not going to win this game."' Toronto captain Mats Sundin said. "We got frustrated and took penalties. That worries me."

Salo added a power-play goal at 18:34 of the third.
