CALGARY, Alberta (AP) -- Patrick Roy benefited from some good luck as he moved within two wins of Terry Sawchuk's record for victories.

Roy made 29 saves Tuesday night for his 445th victory as the
Colorado Avalanche beat the Calgary Flames 3-1.
"One of the shots in the second, (Valeri) Bure took a wrist
shot and I never saw it, it just went straight into my glove,"
said Roy, who opened the season with two ties.
"This was a night where the puck bounced into my glove, on
other nights, that would have hit the post and gone in."
Adam Deadmarsh, Peter Forsberg, and Shjon Podein scored for the
Avalanche while Ray Bourque and Adam Foote each had two assists.
Roy was 50 seconds away from his 49th career shutout when Dwayne
Hay's shot from the left wing trickled through his pads.
"That was a little bit of a bonus for myself being my first
game but unfortunately we didn't come out of it with a win," said
Hay, making his first appearance with the Flames after being
claimed off waivers from Tampa Bay prior to the season.
Calgary has dropped its first two games of the year, both on
home ice.
After a scoreless first period, Roy was busiest in the second
period when buoyed by a string of Avalanche penalties, the Flames
outshot Colorado 13-5.
"Some nights he makes it look so easy in there," Bourque said.
"He's been so focused all of camp and every game we've played this
year, he's been rock solid."
However, despite the wide margin in shots, many of them were
from the perimeter and the Avalanche did a good job of letting Roy
see the puck clearly.
"I felt great out there, was moving well, and the guys played
real sharp in front of me," Roy said.
Calgary started Mike Vernon in goal, as he made his first
appearance with the Flames since 1994.
Vernon, who broke into the NHL the same year as Roy and is
eighth on the career wins list, was not nearly as strong. He
stopped 16 shots.
After stopping all 11 Avalanche shots in the first period,
Vernon gave up three goals on five shots in the second period.
Deadmarsh opened the scoring at 4:32, redirecting a shot by
Bourque past Vernon on the power play.
About 10 minutes later, Forsberg, on a 2-on-1, chose to drive to
the net where he went to the backhand and neatly tucked a shot
under Vernon from close-in.
"It's good to get that first one, I'll take that however it
comes," Forsberg said.
Podein put Colorado up by three when he jumped out of the
penalty box and joined the play, picking a bouncing puck off
Stephane Yelle's stick and firing high past Vernon.
The Flames, 0-for-9 on the power play in their 4-3 loss against
Detroit, were 0-for-9 again Tuesday.
Game notes
Colorado won all six meetings between the clubs last
season, outscoring the Flames 30-9. ... Roy has an 12-15-4 record
against Calgary, one of the few teams he's not above .500 against.
... Vernon needs one more win to reach 372, which would tie him
with Andy Moog for seventh place.
