CHICAGO (AP) -- Martin Brodeur knows that it was a team effort that earned him his second shutout of the season.

Brodeur stopped 23 shots and Jason Arnott scored a pair of power-play goals as the New Jersey Devils beat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-0 Thursday night.

"A shutout isn't just the goalie, it's a team effort," Brodeur said. "We did that tonight. They had a good chance (a one-timer by Chicago's Steve Sullivan) in the last minute, but I saw every puck. I think that makes a big difference."

Brodeur's shutout, the 38th of his NHL career, came against a Chicago team that had scored 14 goals in its last two games.

Sergei Nemchinov and Bobby Holik also scored for the Devils, who have won four of their last five. Scott Niedermayer added two assists for New Jersey.

"It was a nice night," Devils coach Robbie Ftorek said. "The defense played well. The power play worked. The penalty killing was strong."

The Blackhawks and their goalie, Steve Passmore, were hurt by breakdowns and bad bounces. Chicago is now 2-2 since Bob Pulford took over as the team's coach and general manager last week.

"They outworked us tonight in a lot of areas," Blackhawks associate coach Lorne Molleken said. "They're a team that has a little bit of everything, from size to grit to skill, and they took full advantage tonight."

Nemchinov scored the only goal of the first period, at 10:56, on a high, 25-foot shot from the slot. Claude Lemieux's pass from behind the net hit traffic in front of the goal and deflected to Nemchinov.

The Devils extended their lead to 3-0 in the second period on goals by Holik and Arnott.

Holik rifled in a one-timer at 2:03 and Arnott scored at 10:25 when his shot from the top of the slot deflected in off the skate of Blackhawks defenseman Doug Zmolek.

Arnott made it 4-0 when he scored from the left point at 3:09 of the third.
