New-look 'Hawks meet familiar fate

CHICAGO (AP) -- Bob Pulford returned as head coach after 12 years away from the bench, but not much changed for the Chicago Blackhawks. They lost again. And the man whose title Pulford took away -- Lorne Molleken -- made most of the calls.

"It still feels like it's Lorne's team and we feel like we're still playing for Lorne," Hawks star Tony Amonte said after Friday night's 7-4 loss to the Detroit Red Wings, who got a pair of goals from Brendan Shanahan.

Chicago goalie Steve Passmore couldn't get a win for his new coach Friday.
"Lorne's still captain on the bench and controlling things," Amonte said.

"He's making all the calls and line changes, power plays and penalty kills and things like that. Maybe Pully doesn't want to step in right away and do too much. He wants to feel things out and where we're at before making some moves."

Pulford, who was the Hawks GM for almost 20 years until 1997, returned to that job Thursday when general manager Bob Murray was fired. Pulford was also given the title of head coach with Molleken demoted to associate coach in a major shakeup for the floundering team that has only five wins in 25 games.

The 63-year-old Pulford, who had been a senior vice president the last two years, was making his first appearance behind the Blackhawks' bench since 1987. His fourth stint as Chicago's head coach created a strange arrangement with Molleken, who was in his first full season.

On one scorecard handed out before the game, Pulford was listed as head coach and on another lineup sheet it was Molleken, who was in charge of line changes Friday.

"My role hasn't changed," Molleken insisted after the loss.

"Bob Pulford was asked by (owner) Mr. (Bill) Wirtz to come down and help me through this situation and basically give him a closer look at the personnel. Pully is a man of very few words. He was in their ears tonight, he was talking to them about different situations on the ice."

But Pulford, who was unavailable for comment after the game, couldn't produce a victory in another spirited meeting between the long-time rivals.

Shanahan broke a 3-3 tie in the second period, pushing in a rebound around fallen Chicago goaltender Steve Passmore, who got turned around seconds after stopping a shot by Detroit's Pat Verbeek.

Shanahan scored again early in the final period when he threw the puck in front of the goal and it went off Chicago's Boris Mironov and into the net. Larry Murphy's high wrister made it 6-3 Detroit before the Blackhawks' Steve Sullivan scored his first goal of the season. Martin Lapointe completed the scoring with an empty netter in the final minute.

Detroit's Chris Chelios understand what's going on in Chicago. He was the Hawks' captain before being traded away last year.

"They're going through tough times," Chelios said. "They're trying to look for a quick fix and it's tough. I went through it here last year."

Stacy Roest's first-period rebound goal gave the Wings a 1-0 lead and little more than two minutes later Steve Yzerman followed in a shot on the power play as Detroit went up two. Chicago cut it in half with 26 seconds to go in the opening period when Doug Gilmour took a crossing pass from Amonte and beat Ken Wregget.

The Red Wings made it 3-1 in the second on Nicklas Lidstrom's short-handed goal, but minutes later Chicago's J.P. Dumont answered on a shot that deflected off the skate of Detroit's Steve Duchesne's into the net.

Amonte got the Blackhawks even, taking a pass from Gilmour and skating past Chelios for his 14th goal of the season.
