DENVER (AP) -- Claude Lapointe is still upset about the way he left the Colorado Avalanche in 1995.

"I didn't like the way they treated me and I give some extra effort every time I come in and play them," said Lapointe, who scored two goals in a 2:20 span of the third period as the New York Islanders beat the Avalanche 3-2 on Friday night.

The Avalanche went on to win the Stanley Cup after they shipped Lapointe to Calgary for a draft choice.

"I don't hold a grudge, but it still is in the back of my mind because I wanted to win that Cup," said Lapointe, who joined the Islanders as a free agent before the 1996-97 season.

Felix Potvin made 28 saves for the Islanders, Zdeno Chara added a goal, and Steve Webb had an assist for his first point since March 6, 1997. The victory was the Islanders' first on the road over the Colorado-Quebec franchise since Feb. 5, 1994.

"It was a big win for our hockey team and I don't think we have played as badly as our record has indicated," Islanders coach Butch Goring said. "This was a great performance, certainly by Lapointe. He's one of those guys you don't have to tell to work hard."

Chris Drury and Brian Rolston scored for the Avalanche, 1-3-1 in their last five games. Colorado, playing without Joe Sakic for the fifth straight game, was 0-for-5 on the power play.

"The results are disappointing," Colorado coach Bob Hartley said. "We don't have many players now, but no one is going to help us."

Lapointe, who played six seasons for the Avalanche franchise, gave the Islanders a 2-1 lead at 2:03 of the third period, beating goalie Patrick Roy with a backhand shot. Lapointe added his third goal of the season _ all against his former team -- at 5:23.

"Sandis Ozolinsh is a fourth forward that doesn't like to play defense," Lapointe said of the Avalanche defensemen whose turnover led to the Islanders forward's first goal. "If you play good defense on him, you can counter back and get odd man rushes that turn into easy goals."

The Islanders opened the scoring on Chara's second goal of the season at 4:22 of the second period. Eric Brewer sent a slap shot through a screen, and Chara deflected the puck past Roy.

Drury tied it with 4:21 left in the second period.

Rolston completed the scoring with 12 seconds remaining.

"Our effort wasn't very good," Colorado defensman Jon Klemm said. "We made it to easy to bring it out of their end of the ice and into ours."
