Kohn gets winner for Ducks, keeps Flames from OT

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- After tying the score in the third period, the Calgary Flames figured they had the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim right where they wanted them -- heading for overtime.

After all, Calgary's five victories this season all have come in the extra five-minute period. But Ladislav Kohn didn't let it get that far, as he scored on a double deflection with 6:49 remaining to give the Ducks a 2-1 victory Wednesday night.

Aanti Aalto capitalized on a fluke bounce to score the Ducks' other goal, helping end their three-game losing streak and sending Calgary to its third straight loss. The Flames are 0-12 in games decided in regulation -- and all five of their one-goal losses have been by 2-1 scores.

"You wish those breaks would go our way once in awhile," Calgary coach Brian Sutter said. "We did a good job on Paul Kariya. What more can you do? You can play your heart out and you end up with nights like this. If they think they played a good game tonight, they've got to rethink it."

Anaheim goaltender Guy Hebert, who watched Monday night's 6-3 loss at Detroit from the bench after consecutive defeats at Montreal and Ottawa, made 29 saves. He had a little luck, too, as Cory Stillman hit far side of the crossbar with a 45-foot slap shot at 12:45 of the first period.

Stillman, however, managed to find the net with 11:41 left in the third period to pull the Flames even. Valeri Bure carried the puck through the neutral zone and pushed it ahead to Jeff Shantz as he fell forward. Shantz made a perfect cross-ice pass that got through defenseman Oleg Tverdovsky and found Stillman at the edge of the crease for the easy tap-in.

But Anaheim regained the lead during a high-sticking penalty to Jason Wiemer, ending a 0-for-16 drought on the power play. Kariya got a return pass from Marty McInnis and one-timed a 50-footer that ricocheted off Steve Rucchin's stick and Kohn's knee before dribbling across the goal line.

"All I know is it hit me in front. But at this point, I don't really care where," Kohn said after his first goal in 32 games dating back to Feb. 22 of last season.

"After the last few games we were really struggling on special teams. But we worked on it in practice and the focus was on fundamentals, like overloading the front of the crease and throwing the puck at the net."

Just 18 seconds after a fight between Weimer and Anaheim's Jeremy Stevenson woke up the quiet crowd of only 12,928 at the 17,174-seat Anaheim Arena, the Ducks caught goaltender Fred Brathwaite napping and took a 1-0 lead on Aalto's goal at 5:23 of the first period.

Brathwaite went behind his net, expecting to play the puck after Tverdovsky threw it into the right corner. But it caromed straight out to a forechecking McInnis, and Aalto flipped the ensuing pass into an empty net before Brathwaite could scramble back to the crease.

Brathwaite finished with 30 saves.
