CHICAGO (AP) -- The Detroit Red Wings look like they're in midseason form early in the season.

In a 1-0 victory over the Blackhawks on Saturday night, Detroit limited Chicago to 17 shots. Goaltender Chris Osgood faced a few tough chances, but managed to stop them all in earning his second shutout of the season and 24th of his career.

	Doug Gilmour and his Chicago teammates held off the Red Wings for most of the night Saturday but couldn't get any goals of their own.

"We have been playing our best game the last couple of games," Osgood said. "We played a hard game and I thought we killed penalties well, too."

Brendan Shanahan's goal early in the second period was all the Red Wings needed to extend their winning streak to four games and unbeaten string to six (5-0-1). Detroit, which improved to 6-1-1, has allowed a league-low 13 goals.

"I know we're strong defensively," Shanahan said. "Tonight, the goalies made some big saves. It wasn't like most 1-0 games where the chances were uneven."

Jocelyn Thibault stopped 22 shots, but the Blackhawks fell to 0-4-4 and tied a team record with an eight-game winless streak to start a season. In 1953-54, Chicago got off to an 0-7-1 start.

"I just want us to get a little luck," Thibault said. "We know we have a good team and we work so hard every night. Obviously, the last few games we deserved a few wins."

"For the most part tonight, the guys succeeded and played to the best of their ability," Chicago coach Lorne Molleken said. "That's why there's a difference between winning and succeeding. If we play like that, the wins will come."

Still, as the game ended, Chicago remained one of two NHL teams without a win this season. The other winless club, the Boston Bruins, played at San Jose later Saturday night.

Shanahan scored the game's only goal at 1:56 of the second period by converting a rebound of Darren McCarty's shot. Thibault stopped McCarty's drive from the left wing, but Shanahan drove down the slot and fired the loose puck over Thibault's glove.

Osgood made his toughest save five minutes into the third period when he stopped Chicago defenseman Dave Manson, who had joined the rush. After taking a pass from Tony Amonte, Manson fired the puck from 15 feet, but Osgood blocked it with his shoulder.
