SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) -- With one swipe of his glove in overtime, Detroit goaltender Chris Osgood made sure Florida didn't get the victory.

With 1:10 left in the extra period, Osgood made a spectacular glove save to help preserve the Red Wings' 2-2 tie with the Panthers, who are 0-3-3 in their last six meetings with Detroit.

Panthers rookie John Jakopin found himself looking down on Yuri Butsayev Saturday.
Radek Dvorak stole the puck and went in alone toward the net. As Osgood was falling, he reached behind him and gloved Dvorak's point-blank shot to salvage a point in the teams' only meeting of the season.

"Because of the ice, I'd thought he'd be shooting and couldn't try and deke me," said Osgood, who made 25 saves to improve to 6-1-3 against Florida. "I tried to stay low. I knew he was about to shoot and I just timed it well."

Dvorak said the bouncing puck was difficult to control.

"It was a good save," Dvorak said. "The puck was bouncing. There was an opening on the right side. I tried to go upstairs. It was a little bad luck."

Detroit coach Scotty Bowman said the new overtime format that pits 4-on-4 skaters created lots of "excitement" and scoring opportunities.

"There were probably more opportunities in the last five minutes than an entire period," Bowman said. "Both goalies had some tough shots because there was more room out there."

The Panthers haven't beaten the Red Wings since Dec. 1, 1996.

"Getting down 2-0 to one of the premier teams in the league and certainly one of the best defensive teams, I'm very happy to come back and tie this thing," Panthers coach Terry Murray said.

Ryan Johnson and Ray Whitney scored second-period goals for Florida, while Brendan Shanahan and Sergei Fedorov scored for Detroit.

With 14 seconds left in the second period, Whitney scored his third goal of the season to make it 2-2. Pavel Bure passed to Rob Niedermayer in the slot, who was stopped twice by Osgood before Whitney stuffed in the rebound.

The Panthers had the apparent go-ahead goal by Todd Simpson at 2:25 of the third period negated when Chris Wells was whistled for hooking Shanahan, despite trailing the play at center ice.

"It was a tough call," Wells said. "It was probably a little bit of a dive and probably a little bit my fault. He's (Shanahan) a smart veteran player and he got the referee to make the call. I learned my lesson."

Shanahan gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead when he swatted in a rebound of Larry Murphy's shot from the blue line at 11:08 of the first period on a power play. In 13 games against Florida, Shanahan has nine goals and 11 assists.

"It must be the bad ice," Shanahan said of his success against Florida. "It brings everyone down to my skating level."

With 48 seconds left in the first period, Fedorov came from behind the net and backhanded a soft shot off Trevor Kidd's arm and into the net. Kris Draper received an assist.

The Panthers made it 2-1 at 1:42 of the second period when Johnson squeezed a rebound underneath a sprawled Osgood for his second career goal. Viktor Kozlov took the initial shot and was credited with an assist, as was Paul Laus.

Osgood, pulled from Thursday night's win over Atlanta with cramps in his leg, made 25 saves. He is 2-0-1 this season and improved to 6-1-3 career against Florida.

"They played a very good game, but we didn't generate much of an attack against them," Bowman said.
