BOX SCORE
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- Peter Schaefer scored the go-ahead power-play goal 98 seconds into the third period as the Vancouver Canucks recorded their first preseason win, 5-3 over the Calgary Flames. Bill Muckalt had the puck behind the net and passed to the left faceoff circle to Schaefer, who put a wrist shot past goaltender Grant Fuhr. The Canucks were 3-for-10 on the power play, while the Flames ended up 2-for-9. Markus Naslund, who set up Schaefer's tally, scored his second preseason goal exactly three minutes later for a two-goal cushion as Vancouver improved to 1-5-2. Florida and Nashville are the only winless teams remaining. Calgary forged a 3-3 tie with 6:05 left in the second period. Rene Corbet stripped the puck from defenseman Jason Strudwick and fed Valeri Bure, who beat Kevin Weekes with a high shot to the glove side. Weekes, who has never won a regular-season game, made 33 saves and improved to 1-1-1. Obtained earlier this month from St. Louis, Fuhr fell to 0-3 despite making 26 saves. Canucks rookie Steve Kariya, the younger brother of Anaheim superstar Paul Kariya, had two assists and leads the team with 10 points. The teams play here again on Monday.
