WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Peter Bondra's goal with 6:08 remaining snapped a tie and lifted the Washington Capitals to a 3-2 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers in the exhibition opener for both teams.

Bondra, who also had an assist, was camped beside the left goalpost when he received a pass from rookie defenseman Nolan Yonkman and slid the puck past goaltender Jean-Marc Pelletier for the game-winner.

Sandy McCarthy tied the game for the Flyers with a power-play goal at 10:24 of the third period when he found a loose puck during a goal-mouth scramble and jammed it past goaltender Sebastian Charpentier.

Sergei Gonchar scored twice and Adam Oates added three assists for the Capitals, who had former Georgetown basketball coach John Thompson behind the bench as a guest assistant.

Valeri Zelepukin also scored for the Flyers, who played without Eric Lindros, John LeClair and Eric Desjardins.
