Flames' Fuhr might walk away

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) -- Grant Fuhr might have ended his distinguished career with a forgettable performance against a familiar team.

Fuhr, who won five Stanley Cups with the Oilers in the 1980s, came on in relief of Calgary goalie Fred Brathwaite to start the third period and, with the game tied, allowed two goals as the Flames lost 6-3 to Edmonton on Saturday night.

Alex Selivanov had three goals and an assist to help Edmonton move up a spot to seventh in the Western Conference playoff seedings.

Edmonton finishes its regular-season schedule with 88 points, one more than the San Jose Sharks. But the Sharks, who were seventh entering Saturday's action, have one game left -- at home to Vancouver on Sunday.

If San Jose picks up at least one point, it will get the seventh spot and relegate Edmonton to eighth.

Fuhr, 37, recently indicated he will retire after the season. When the game ended, the crowd gave the goalie a standing ovation while players from both teams embraced him.

But he wouldn't confirm it was definitely his final appearance.

"It's a pretty good chance it was," Fuhr said. "I won't guarantee that, I've done some strange things before where I figured I might be done and I managed to come back. As far as I'm concerned right now, I might be but I'll leave the door open so if I do change my mind, I'll come back."

Fuhr finishes with a 5-13-2 record this season, his first with Calgary. He raised his career win total to 403, sixth-best in NHL history, but the last victory came Nov. 10.

Fuhr, who missed part of the season because of knee surgery, played for Edmonton from 1981-91.

Rem Murray had a goal and two assists for Edmonton.

The Oilers only were assured of a postseason berth Friday, when they rallied from a 3-1 third-period deficit and eventually defeated Vancouver 5-4 in overtime on Murray's empty-net goal with 59 seconds left.

Fuhr entered with the score 3-1, and Calgary scored the first two goals of the third period to tie it. But Selivanov scored his second goal of the night, at 10:02, Doug Weight tallied on a breakaway, and Selivanov completed his third career hat-trick by scoring into an empty net at 19:28.

"This was a great way to finish the season," Selivanov said. "Winning is a good way to finish the season and now we'll be ready for the big games in the playoffs."

Calgary lost Jarome Iginla in the second period when he got took a high stick in the left eye from Oilers defenseman Tom Poti. Iginla was taken to an eye specialist as a precaution.

Marc Savard, Andrei Nazarov and rookie Sergei Varlamov scored for Calgary.

Mike Minard started in place of goalie Tommy Salo for Edmonton and made 33 saves to collect his first NHL victory.
