Hot Iginla extends scoring streak

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) -- After a slow start, Jarome Iginla has become one of the Calgary Flames' most consistent players.

Iginla scored twice as the Flames ended a 10-game winless streak with a 4-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Friday night.

Iginla scored his goals in the second period to stake the Flames to a 4-0 lead, extending his points streak to nine games. He has seven goals and six assists over that span.

"It's nice to get the back that winning feeling again," Iginla said. "This is a character builder for us because everyone in the dressing room knew how important this game was."

Marc Savard and Jeff Shantz had the other goals for Calgary. Valeri Bure added three assists.

Janne Niinimaa and Bill Guerin scored for the Oilers, who had their six-game unbeaten streak (4-0-2) stopped.

The Flames had been 0-9-1 in their past 10 games, including four overtime losses.

It's been a long road back for Iginla, who missed the first three games of the season in a contract dispute, then failed to score in his first 11 games.

"Right now, I'm definitely feeling as confident as I have in my whole NHL career," Iginla said.

Calgary goalie Fred Brathwaite made 35 saves. One of his biggest stops came late in the third period, when he foiled Todd Marchant on a short-handed breakaway.

"We had great opportunities tonight but just couldn't put the puck in the net," Oilers captain Doug Weight said. "We're disappointed we lost but now we have a chance to redeem ourselves ...at home."

The game between the two Alberta rivals was played before a crowd of 17,145 at the Canadian Airlines Saddledome, Calgary's third sellout of the season.

Flames defenseman Bobby Dollas left the game and did not return after hitting his head against the glass on a heavy check from Mike Grier.
