Manson scores in first game for Stars

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Just as one key player returns to the Dallas Stars lineup, another goes out.

Jamie Langenbrunner, who missed 11 games because of bruised ribs and a pinched nerve in his neck, scored twice in his return from the injured list Wednesday night as the Stars beat the Anaheim Mighty Ducks 5-3.

"It was a little tough to stay in game shape, but I'll get better as the week goes on," said Langenbrunner, who opened the scoring on a power play at the 6:46 mark and added his ninth goal with 4:21 to play. "It feels good to get back in there. It wasn't a lot of fun sitting at home and not playing, but the fact that the team was winning made it a lot easier."

Brett Hull, Dallas' second-leading scorer, broke his nose less than 12 minutes into the game.

Stars coach Ken Hitchcock said Hull will return to Dallas to get his nose operated on, but only expects him to miss two games.

"There was significant damage there," Hitchcock said. "He's got to have that straightened out so that he has no further breathing problems, and he'll have to play with a face shield for about a two-week period.

"I thought Hull was having a hell of a game till he got hurt, but Langenbrunner stepped in and played very well."

It was the latest in a rash of injuries for Dallas, which won its fourth straight despite the absence of Joe Nieuwendyk, Jere Lehtinen, Derian Hatcher, Brian Skrudland and Shawn Chambers. In addition, Aaron Gavey missed his second straight game because of a hyperextended knee.

"We've played like this for a month now," Hitchcock said. "We just keep coming at you. We've got some good young players who are playing very well, and we're getting healthier as we move along.

"We have the potential to have Hatcher and Lehtinen all back within a week or so, and that's going to help us a lot."

Dave Manson scored in his first game with Dallas, following Tuesday's trade from Chicago. Brenden Morrow and Sergei Zubov also scored for the Stars.

Paul Kariya scored his 200th NHL goal and Fredrik Olausson and Matt Cullen also scored for the Ducks, who lost to the Stars for the 22nd time in their last 30 meetings. Ed Belfour, whose next victory will be his 300th, made 23 saves to improve his record against Anaheim to 17-6-1.

The Stars have 42 consecutive victories when they score at least three goals.

"They've got a lot of experienced players who know what it takes to win on this level," Kariya said. "They played a very smart game tonight. They didn't make any turnovers, battled us hard down low, and when they got opportunities to score, they scored."

Anaheim tied it 1-1 at 11:55 of the first period during a hooking penalty against Hull, who was accidentally cut on the bridge of the nose by the stick of Jeff Nielsen as he hauled down the Ducks right wing.

Olausson capitalized on Hull's penalty by one-timing Kariya's feed past Belfour's stick hand from 55 feet. It was Anaheim's 10th power-play goal in six games and only the third surrendered by Dallas, the league's top penalty-killing unit, in 58 short-handed situations.

Olausson's eighth goal extended his point-scoring streak to nine games, the longest this season by any NHL defenseman, and broke the club record for defenseman set by J.J. Daigneault.

The Stars went ahead 2-1 about four minutes later on the power play. Guy Hebert stopped Zubov's slap shot from the right point, but Mike Modano grabbed the rebound at the right on the net and set up Morrow's short backhander from the slot.

"We played well in spurts, but we didn't play a 60-minute game," Kariya said. "The big thing that cost us tonight was stupid penalties. They have a great power play and a lot of talented players, so you can't give them opportunities because it takes a lot of energy out of our best players to kill those penalties."

Manson ended a 40-game goal-scoring drought with his first since last April 8. Cullen cut it to 3-2 with 38 seconds left in the second. But Zubov restored Dallas' two-goal margin less than three minutes into the final period.

Kariya converted Teemu Selanne's pass from behind the net with 8:07 remaining for his 31st goal, but the rally fell short.
