BOSTON (AP) -- The Boston Bruins received a wake-up call from their owner Jeremy Jacobs and responded accordingly.

Byron Dafoe made 25 saves for his third shutout, and the Bruins won only their second home game since Thanksgiving, beating the Buffalo Sabres 1-0 on Saturday night.

"My goals against isn't where I'd like it to be," Dafoe said. "I've struggled at times, but I definitely feel things are coming together."

The win for Boston came after Jacobs made critical comments about coach Pat Burns in a story in Saturday's Boston Globe.

"I think our team has been managed well by Harry Sinden and Mike O'Connell, but our coaching has not been what I think it should be," Jacobs said.

Sinden is Boston's general manager and O'Connell is his assistant.

"This thing coming out today was surprising," Bruins captain Ray Bourque said. "We don't need that right now and it is a distraction."

Boston avoided a 10-game home-winless streak, which would have been its longest since the 1924-25 season. The Bruins are 2-9-6 in their last 17 games at the Fleet Center.

Boston's last home victory was a 2-0 win over Phoenix on Dec. 13.

P.J. Axelsson scored the game's only goal at 11:52 of the first period when he rebounded a Joe Thornton slap shot and flipped the puck past Sabres goalie Martin Biron.

"Thornton's shot hit my toe and came straight out," Biron said. "I was off balance and Axelsson slammed it home."

Biron made 24 saves and has allowed only 14 goals in his last nine games, including three shutouts.

Vladimir Tsyplakov had the Sabres best chance to tie the game with 30 seconds left, but Dafoe preserved the win.

"We had a lapse in the second period, but Dafoe made some big saves during that stretch that kept us in the game," Burns said.

The Bruins shut out Buffalo for the third time this season. The Sabres have been held scoreless seven times.

"Both goalies earned their pay," Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said. "We are a good team when all our lines are generating, but our offense hasn't shown up in our last three road games."

Buffalo lost its fourth straight road game and has won only once this season when trailing after the first period.

Boston has now recorded at least one point in eight straight games.

Sabres goalie Dominik Hasek, out since October with a groin injury, could return to the lineup as early as Thursday.
