Varada, Biron power Sabres over Ducks

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- It's been a while since Vaclav Varada scored a goal. Once he figured out how to do it, the next one was easy.

Varada broke a 25-game goal drought by scoring twice and rookie Martin Biron made 17 saves for his fourth shutout of the season as the Buffalo Sabres beat the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim 5-0 Monday night.

"I don't score often, so to get two goals is outstanding," said Varada, whose only other goal this season was Nov. 10 against Boston. "It's good to contribute."

Varada has 15 goals in 147 career games.

Curtis Brown, Dixon Ward and Miroslav Satan also scored for the Sabres, who had lost six of nine.

"We're trying to get back to what was successful," Buffalo coach Lindy Ruff said. "We played a pretty tight game. It was a real solid effort."

Biron, who was rarely tested, credited his teammates for making his job easier.

"Everybody did their job," Biron said. "Pretty much anybody could have been in the net."

Brown opened the scoring on a power play 21 seconds into the second period, his 15th goal of the season. Buffalo scored for the fifth straight time while on the power play.

Ward made it 2-0 with 2:43 left in the period, and Varada scored his first of the night -- second of the season -- with 34 seconds remaining in the period.

Varada made it 4-0 at 10:19 of the third, completing a two-on-one with Michael Peca. Varada took a pass from Peca high in the slot and beat Dominic Roussel to the glove side.

Satan, who leads the Sabres with 23 goals, completed the scoring with a wraparound short-handed goal with 1 second remaining.

"It was good to see a couple of chances go in," Ruff said. "We definitely earned our breaks. Every team has a tough night. They came out a little flat -- I don't know why -- and we took advantage of it."

Buffalo improved to 4-2-0 in Anaheim, while the Mighty Ducks lost for the fourth time in five home games. Anaheim is 1-8-1 overall in its last 10 games.

After having the NHL's best power play last season, the Ducks -- 0-for-5 Monday -- have only two goals in their last 48 man-advantage opportunities.

"Tonight was an embarrassing effort by our hockey team," said Anaheim coach Craig Hartsburg. "There are no excuses. There is nowhere to hide. I was very disappointed in the effort and intensity."

After the game, Anaheim recalled left wing Maxim Balmochnykh and defenseman Vitaly Vishnevski from Cincinnati of the AHL.
