Redskins: Training camp report

Pro Football Weekly

CAMP AT A GLANCE
 Steve Spurrier
Steve Spurrier played musical chairs with his QBs in 2002.
  Location: Redskins Park, Ashburn, Va.
Rookies report: July 27
Veterans report: July 27
Preseason schedule:
Aug. 9: Lost to Carolina, 20-0
Aug. 16: Lost to New England, 20-13
   Aug. 23: Baltimore
   Aug. 28: at Jacksonville

In Pro Football Weekly's third and final installment of training-camp reports, we look at the good (biggest positive), the bad (biggest disappointment) and the ugly (injury update) factors surrounding every team halfway through the 2003 preseason. We also set our sights on a rookie to watch on each team, for whatever the reason.

Aug. 19

Biggest positive: The pass catchers have all had a great camp, starting with Laveranues Coles, who has set a tone of hard work for the rest of the group. Rod Gardner has fed off Coles' example, and Cliff Russell and rookie Taylor Jacobs are each having good camps. Another new weapon, KR-RB Chad Morton, has looked exciting catching the ball and could be a big factor in the passing game.

Biggest disappointment: RB Trung Canidate is winning the battle for the starting spot, but he's doing it by default. Although he had a decent showing vs. New England, Canidate has done nothing special and looks too small and not durable enough to handle the full-time load. The joke around camp is that Ladell Betts is moving up the charts the more time he misses with injury.

Injury update: DT Brandon Noble could be out for the year after suffering a sprained left knee and separated patella tendon. C Larry Moore is out 2-4 weeks with a knee injury. MLB Jeremiah Trotter, coming off major knee surgery, says he is about "85 or 90 percent." Betts continues to deal with a nagging elbow injury, but most of the ills have been minor. OLB LaVar Arrington's toe won't keep him out.

Rookie to watch: With only three draft picks, RB Sultan McCullough has had a chance to shine. Despite going undrafted, he has displayed the quickness and elusiveness that Canidate supposedly has. McCullough is still fighting for a roster spot, but working again with offensive coordinator Hue Jackson - who recruited McCullough at USC - has given him confidence.

Part 2 -- Aug. 12

Veteran to watch: Rushing off the edge, OLB LaVar Arrington has been a terror in camp, leveling OLT Chris Samuels on one play and decking TE Zeron Flemister on another. Although he will not rush from a three-point stance at all this season as he did last, Arrington could be even more of a threat to opposing quarterbacks. The team thinks he can eventually be the best all-around OLB in the league.

Player on the verge: CB Fred Smoot calls FS Matt Bowen "Triple-X" because there is always something going on with him. The eccentric Bowen has fired up his defensive teammates with some big hits in camp. Quiet on the field but loquacious off it, Bowen has been one of the big hits -- for his hits -- in camp this summer.

Strongest position: The offensive line appears to be very strong with the addition of four offensive guards, led by ORG Randy Thomas, in the offseason to complement standout OTs Samuels and Jon Jansen. It was thought by some that C Larry Moore could get pushed out of the starting lineup, but he appears to be playing well in the early going.

Weakest position: Right now the Redskins are using Brandon Noble and Jermaine Haley at defensive tackle after the release of Dan Wilkinson. That not only thins the depth, but it also leaves the team a little lighter up front than they would like. The staff even has toyed with the idea of moving DE Renaldo Wynn inside, where he has played in the past. At 280 pounds, Wynn is too small to play tackle full-time except in obvious passing situations.

Part 1 -- July 18

Most significant change: A huge, offseason spending spree netted several new players, the most significant of which are wide receiver Laveranues Coles and guard Randy Thomas. Coles gives Steve Spurrier the speed he so badly wanted on offense, and Thomas helps shore up a suspect interior of the offensive line.

Reason for optimism: The team speed is much better and the line has much more depth and talent inside. With a year under his belt, Spurrier -- who will be more involved with defensive and special-teams game-planning -- should know his team and the rest of the league better.

Cause for concern: There is no proven, every-down running back on the roster. Trung Canidate, Ladell Betts, Kenny Watson and Chad Morton all have just a handful of starts under their belts. The losses on defense -- defensive tackle Daryl Gardener and coordinator Marvin Lewis -- leave the team without a playmaking tackle and a defensive mastermind.

Training-camp battle to watch: Running back is the most significant battle, although it looks like Canidate is the favorite and the coaching staff wants him to start. After all, if he doesn't start, what does he do? Safety is also a three-way battle between Ifeanyi Ohalete, David Terrell and longshot Andre Lott.

Don't be surprised if: WR Cliff Russell, back from injury, makes an impact in a crowded receiving corps, and Watson becomes the odd man out in the RB situation and is released by the end of camp.
