Kearse should be back in form

By John Clayton

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Observations on the 2003 Tennessee Titans from training camp practices:

Kearse
Kearse
1. Defensive end Jevon Kearse should be fine coming off two foot operations this offseason. He's practicing only once a day and he looked a little rusty going against Miami Dolphins' offensive linemen in pass-rush drills. Kearse, who had only one start last season, says he's a little raw, but he has the entire month of August to regain his form as one of the game's scariest pass rushers. He's a free agent after the season, but the team will begin serious extension talks after he shows more in the preseason.

2. Rookie receiver Tyrone Calico is an interesting big receiver whom the Titans are trying to groom as a deep threat. He's 6-4 and 222 pounds, and, after starting his football career as a linebacker-defensive end, Calico is still learning the receiver position. He's got great deep speed, and if can work on his hands and his routes he could help Steve McNair stretch the field.

3. First-round choice Andre Woolfolk is currently the fifth cornerback in the Titans' playing rotation, but he is a better, more physical player than even the Titans expected. He loves to get a good shot on a receiver. Woolfolk will be a future starter for the Titans, but the coaching staff wants to use his first year for development and won't rush him into the starting lineup.

4. A year ago, the Titans didn't know what they had at safety. Now, they have two very good ones. Lance Shulters is a great leader and powerful hitter. Tank Williams is a big 6-3, 223-pounder who loves to hit and finished the season playing well.
