Freeman needs to harness his aggression

By John Clayton

RIVER FALLS, Wis. -- Here are five observations from the Chiefs training camp:

1. In camp, the Chiefs are calling second-round choice Eddie Freeman, a powerful, raw 305-pound defensive lineman a throwback. Others call him a beast in a positive sense. Freeman has the type of power and temperament teams look for in defensive line. He doesn't back down. Sure, he got in trouble for letting his temper fly out of control. He was fined $2,500 for using a helmet to slug teammate John Tait in a fight in practice. Two Vikings blockers accused him of eye-gouging. If Freeman can harness the temper without losing his aggressiveness, he could be a good one.

Marvin Minnis
Snoop Minnis caught 33 passes last season.
2. Wide receiver Sylvester Morris, coming off a major knee operation, never had great speed, but he is struggling to get downfield quickly. Though he appears to be okay healthwise, the lack of speed is noticeable in a passing offense that stresses quickness and the ability to run after the catch. The Chiefs could face a tough roster decision involving him.

3. With Snoop Minnis about a week away from return from a foot injury, the Chiefs are experimenting with their No. 3 receiver. The one who excites coach Dick Vermeil the most is 5-foot-8 returner Dante Hall, a former running back who has comparable speed and quickness to Az-Zahir Hakim, the former Rams No. 3 receiver. Unknown Curtis Jackson is another candidate, but Vermeil has a lot of question marks after starters Johnnie Morton and Eddie Kennison.

4. Right tackle Tait has lost valuable time trying to learn the right tackle position while he recovers from cuts from last week's fight with Freeman. Tait, a starting left tackle a year ago, is a solid run blocker. Pass-blocking is the part of his game that needs the most work and the adjustment to the right side hasn't been easy as far as getting his footwork right. Tait should practice this week, but he needs a lot of time to get ready for the regular season.

5. The defensive line was a weakness last year, but should be a strength this season. Defensive end Eric Hicks is the line's star, a solid run-stopper who can rush the passer and dominate tackles. Once Ryan Sims ends his holdout, the Chiefs want to move Freeman to end to create a great rotation of Hicks, Duane Clemons and John Browning. Derrick Ransom and Eric Downing are working as the nose tackles, but don't count out journeyman Devin Wyman, who's having a good camp.
