New and improved Urlacher

By John Clayton
ESPN.com

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. -- Here are five observations from the Bears' training camp.

Brian Urlacher
Brian Urlacher had six sacks and three interceptions last season.
1. This one is scary: Middle linebacker Brian Urlacher is 10 pounds heavier and he looks even faster, if that is possible. Urlacher trained in Atlanta this offseason and looks even more fluid on the field. The Bears have so much speed and size at linebacker that often the trio -- Urlacher, Rosevelt Colvin and Warrick Holdman -- keeps cutting in front of each other for plays.

2. Offensive coordinator John Shoop, not necessarily responding to criticism that the Bears didn't go downfield much, plans to use more deep passes. Quarterback Jim Miller said the reason for the conservatism a year ago was simple: He was coming off an Achilles tendon injury. That, plus the offense had a rookie halfback (Anthony Thomas), a rookie receiver (David Terrell) and a young coordinator (Shoop). More long passes are being thrown in practices by Miller and backup Chris Chandler.

3. Chandler still throws one of the best deep balls in the NFL. Knowing he has tall, fast receivers, Chandler has that knack for laying the long pass in a catchable area for Terrell, Marty Booker or Dez White to position themselves for the catch near the cornerback.

4. The defensive line won't get into a true rhythm until mid-August. Defensive end Bryan Robinson, coming off a home accident in which he hurt both wrists, won't be able to practice until next week at the earliest. Defensive tackle Ted Washington is easing his way into camp coming off a leg problem.

5. The Bears hope to get more production from their tight ends. They believe Luther Broughton adds a pass-catching element. Dustin Lyman also made a few nice catches in practice.
