A draft's impact can be felt by individuals as well -- as in those whose jobs are in jeopardy because of the new influx of talent. Users sent us their thoughts on who will feel the post-draft heat come training camp. The best comments are posted below.
Norv Turner is feeling so much heat, he'll soon be as red as his team's uniform. The #2 and #3 pick, plus ALL the free agents and a young hands-on owner that makes Al Davis and Jerry Jones look like silent partners is enough to get Norv fired for simply not covering the spread while winning the Super Bowl.
The hottest seat going into training camp has got to be Brad Johnson's. The expectations in the Redskins organization are high. It should prove to be an interesting scenario to watch.
I'd turn up the temp on the hot seat for Redskins defensive coordinator Ray Rhodes. With the signing of Bruce Smith and Mark Carrier and the drafting of Champ Bailey ('99) and LaVar Arrington this year, Mr. Snyder doesn't want to see another Nolan era evolving in D.C. People forget it was the Redskins' stingy defenses in '91 and the late 80's that allowed Gibbs' offense to play ground-control ball. Right now, the only thing you can count on from the 'Skins defense is Darrell Green being a year older and still running a 4.5 forty.
I think the new Jets coach and owner will be feeling the heat. Al Groh is not a good coach, and to get rid of one of the best receivers in the league in Keyshawn Johnson is just plain stupid. Are they idiots? That would be like the 49ers getting rid of Jerry Rice back in the 80's. What a bunch of morons. You never throw away your best player.
I think Giants head coach Jim Fassel should be feeling the heat. Being a long time Giants fan, I know the Maras are lenient on their coaches, giving them every opportunity to prove themselves a winner. The problem is, Fassel is in his fourth year, was hired as an offensive guru, and has yet to show anyone that the woeful Giant offense is close to being turned around. If Ron Dayne is a flop, I think you can expect to see Fassel out the door.
I believe Dennis Green will be among those who'll feel the flame most of all. Although he finally went after some defense in the most recent draft, he appears to have a habit of drafting players two or three rounds earlier than they should go, which reduces the overall quality of his draft. Also, going with a rookie QB and the defensive holes that were not addressed in the draft, I believe there's a good chance that the Vikings will have a new head coach at this time next year.
Bill Belichick better prove that he is worth the No. 1 pick for New England. Never has a team needed a running back worse than the Patriots (OK, OK, maybe Miami), and to me Shaun Alexander had just as much NFL potential as any of the other backs in the draft.
Bill Cowher needs to win now. He helped himself with Plaxico Burress but his job is still in Kordell Stewart's hands.
As usual I think that the Cowboys' head coaching position will be in the hot seat. I mean I don't even know this new guy (Dave Campo) and I am a big Cowboys fan.
How about Ron Wolf in Green Bay? In a team that expects the playoffs, he said he overrated the team's talent but then passed the blame to the coaching staff by sacking all of them. If Mike Sherman doesn't produce wins, then people have to look to Wolf, who cannot fire two first-year coaches in consecutive seasons. This team is aging and taking steps in the wrong direction. Ron Wolf is the man who needs to bring in the talent. If he can't, no doubt Green Bay fans will be calling for the GM's head instead of the coaches' this year.
I think that Kansas City general manager Carl Peterson is on a hot seat with the city. We are now in Year 12 of the five-year plan to the Super Bowl. I think we're due...and this draft has some great upside to it, but if they don't perform, I believe they'll ask for his head on a platter.
It's too bad there is no hot seat for owners, otherwise Mike Brown would on it. But hey! He's got a great deal with the city of Cincinnati and the taxpayers of Hamilton County. Guaranteed sell-outs in his new over-budget stadium, the return of Carl (I 'm going to hold out unless they trade me) Pickens, and the drafting (and soon-to-be-holdout) of Peter Warrick. The last time I was in Cincinnati, I left two Bengals tickets on the dash of my car and when I returned, someone had broken into my car and left another two. Woe is the Bengals until someone is allowed to buy the team. Paul Brown has got be rolling over in his grave.
I think a lot of heat is going to be felt by New England Patriots owner Bob Kraft. Kraft has brought Parcells-clone Bill Belichick to run the Pats at the expense of a first-round pick in the 2000 draft. This is coupled with the new stadium plans that were recently unveiled in Foxboro, that were preceeded by a rights to own your season tickets (at a cost, of course) for current season ticket holders (who) were somewhat held hostage. Then the final blow was the team in salary cap despair, thus needing to let go several big-name players (i.e., Ben Coates, Bruce Armsrtong, Shawn Jefferson). This will no doubt hurt the team's chances of having a playoff caliber season this year, which all comes on the eve of a new coach, new stadium and more expense to the fan.
I'll tell you this, if the Rams drop a couple of close games because of a missed field goal and giving the opposition good field position on kickoffs, Mike Martz will feel the heat for his puzzling draft selection. Trung Candidate?
I think that Kevin Smith in Dallas needs to be very worried about his job. Dwayne Goodrich is a good cornerback with great coverage skills. With Kevin's recent trends of pass interference calls and frequent injuries, there should definitely be some consideration from the Cowboys coaching staff into looking at one of their three new corners starting in his place.
Feeling the heat? Let's talk about how Keyshawn Johnson is going to feel after getting a huge paycheck to become a one-man offensive threat. If anyone feels the heat, it's gonna be Keyshawn in Tampa.
What about Denver's kickoff returner and corner Chris Watson? Shanahan loved this kid out of college but then drafted Deltha O'Neal, a young man with a similar resume. Looks like he could be on the way out.
I don't think there is a coach who is under more pressure than the new Oakland special teams coach. A kicker in the first round and a punter in a later round says the team has invested serious resources in a single phase and they want to see drastic improvements that probably cost 3 or 4 losses last season.
