Rankings response: Out like a lamb

ESPN.com

After 17 weeks of ESPN.com's NFL Power Rankings and 17 weeks of users' comments and complaints, we've come to an end. Maybe 16 weeks of venting wore everyone out, because this week's comments were fairly tame.

There were some fans in Tennessee who felt that the Titans should have been ranked higher. We got the normal load of complaints about the Rams' easy schedule. We also got a good amount of mail from users all over the country who were upset that Wade Phillips benched Doug Flutie.

However, most of you didn't have that much to say about our final Rankings of the year. Here are some of the best e-mails we received this week.

Well, it took you 17 weeks, but it looks like you finally got it right. Your arrogance got the best of you with your season-long love affair with the Jaguars despite the fact that they had a cush schedule. This season's results were not the only upside-down thing that happened. You share that distinction.

Steve Gebhart
Boston

In your comments about the Titans and life being unfair, it sounds like you are saying "These guys are really great, but I can't say that yet." Am I reading you correctly or will we just have to wait until we have quietly beaten St. Louis (again) in the Super Bowl before we get any respect?

Mark Duncan
Nashville, Tenn.

Your best prediction from the preseason was undoubtedly your insight into the Bills' mindset, even if it did take all season to transpire: "Despite his magical '98 season, Doug Flutie can't stop looking back over his shoulder." Shame on the Bills! Shame, shame, shame.

Burr Rutledge
New York

For lack of anywhere else to send the question, what indeed are they thinking in Buffalo to bench Flutie now when he is needed most. Have the playoffs suddenly gone to some sort of best-of-three format, so they can put him in after Johnson blows the first game? Surely this is one of the stupidest coaching decisions ever made (rivaling even Wayne Fontes and his "prevent" defense). Yeah, I know it has nothing to do with the Power Rankings, but I just had to tell someone.

Raleigh, N.C.

How is it that teams like the Patriots, Chargers, Giants and Lions can be ranked ahead of the Chicago Bears? Lets face it, with a decent NFL kicker the Bears could have easily been at least a 9-7 team on their way into the playoffs. You've got to love this offense though.

Mike Galvin
Chicago

The only thing Rankings ever prove is that most of the time the "experts" know little more about the game than an average Sportscenter-watching fan. But, at least you get paid for your opinions. What a great job! I'm jealous.

Pittsboro, Ind.

Looks like your preseason Rankings were quite rank. Next year, do me a favor and rank the Raiders 31st!

David Hirsch
Agoura Hills, Calif.

Phillips benched Flutie even though he led the team to a 10-5 record while playing in the menacing AFC East. I only hope that the Buffalo owners show the same loyalty to Phillips at the end of the season that Phillips has shown to Flutie at the end of the regular season.

Salas Saraiya
Palo Alto, Calif.
